Coca Cola cuts sugar from their beverages by 26% in SA following sugar tax

Dear members,

Over the last two years, Coca-Cola South Africa has cut its sugar content in their beverages by over a quarter to align with the country's sugar tax.

Currently, there is a tax of 2.1 cents per gram of sugar on all sweetened drinks but the first 4g of sugar per 100ml are exempt from taxation in order to push companies to decrease the sugar content in their products or face a decrease in sales.

"We recognise that too much sugar isn’t good for anyone and support the current recommendation by several leading health authorities, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), that people should limit their intake of added sugar to no more than 10% of their total energy/calorie consumption,” says Camilla Osborne, Head of Communications for Coca-Cola Southern and East Africa.

Do you support the sugar tax in South Africa? Have you noticed a change in the taste of Coca Cola and would a price hike in sugary drinks discourage you from buying them?

People has to invest in their health, you can buy material things but you cant buy health. Personally i made a decision to go for low kilojoule drinks and at home i take sweeteners for my tea and coffee. Reply
