Keeping your blood pressure in check - World Hypertension Day

On Monday, 17 May, the world observes World Hypertension Day to create awareness about a condition that affects 1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women.

The World Health Organisation says more than 1.13 billion people are living with hypertension and two-thirds of those people live in low and middle income countries.
Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure refers to abnormally high blood pressure levels. WHO describes blood pressure as the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the body's arteries, the major blood vessels in the body.

To keep your blood pressure in check, it is important to get it measured regularly. You can do so using a home blood pressure monitor or visit your nearest healthcare centre.

1.How can you keep your blood pressure in check?

You can keep your blood pressure normal by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making some changes to your diet and daily routine.

2.Maintaining a balanced diet:

Your daily diet must include whole grains, fruits and vegetables, beans and lentils etc. Foods with too much salt or sugar could increase blood pressure levels. Avoid eating foods such as red meat, foods with saturated fats and added sugar.


Getting some exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can help to lower your blood pressure. You can do cardiovascular exercises such as jogging, hiking, aerobics, walking etc. Take at least 20 minutes out of your day to do some exercises.
